Great throwing skills are the hallmark of softball team that good on defense. This is due to take good players to throw the ball exactly once, while in motion. And accuracy of throwing and catching the ball are important in the execution of good defense on the field.
Whatever your level of expertise to the team defense, you throw these drills below can help your team throwing skills.
Bent Knee
This drill is important in teaching your playershow to properly throw the ball. What you do is partner two players and position them 15 m apart.
After that they take the right course, by kneeling on the leg of the throwing-arm side, with the other leg bent and foot flat on the floor. The shooter then points down the gauntlet to their partner and throws the ball to their partner with the proper throwing mechanics.
Then the catcher receives the ball and does the same procedure.
Throw in the TrashCan
This one is designed for outfielders to improve their accuracy at throwing to bases.
To do this, place a large trash can (or a large box, or whatever's available) on the side of the home plate. You then throw a grounder or a fly ball to the outfielders, giving them 10-15 throws each. Once they catch the ball, they should throw the ball to the trash can on one hop, if possible.
Controlled Fungo
A controlled fungo can be used to create or simulate a defensive situation. It's also great for improving your team's baserunning skills and conditioning.
To do this, let some of your players take defensive positions on the field. Other players would then play offense by the positioning of some of them in one or more bases. Then Fungo from home plate and let your players the ball.
Throwing on the Run
It can be a challenge to the ball while on the run to throw. And since most of the defensive plays are done in this way, theseshould also be a part of the practice of your team.
In this drill, you can partner in two lines facing each other, about 60 meters apart. Make sure that they prevent good enough apart from each other to meet them from spreading.
One partner even throws the ball, running 3-5 steps, then throws a chest-high throw to their partners. Then recedes back into its original position. The other partner would catch the ball then do the same.
These are just some of the exercises that you can usetrain your teams defensive capabilities. They may not be able to define the terms of the first time you teach them to understand it. If that happens, you give them the time to repeat the same exercises, until the concepts become second nature to them. Everything underneath what then of course.
